World Migratory Bird Day and BLESS 30th Annversary
On the weekend of September 11th and 12th 2021, BLESS celebrated World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) and our 30th anniversary as an organization at Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park. Because of the pandemic, precautions were taken to ensure the safety of attendees as well as those working the event. The theme for WMBD in 2021 was "Sing, Fly, Soar like a Bird".
BLESS Directors Lyn and Tony Druett and Linda Brain put together an exhibit showing bird routes for species that migrate through Alberta every year to places as far away as the Falkland Islands off South America.
BLESS Directors Jillian Dyck, Miles Constable and Dave Burkhart had exhibits showing BLESS awards and achievements over the organization's 30-year history with a focus on the long running BLESS Summer Nature Program.
Mariko and Emily Collins provided first aid support and heped staff the BLESS displays to answer questions from those who attended. Sonya Moyer helped with setup on the Friday before the event.
On both days, Abigail from Nature Kids, a program run by Nature Alberta to educate children on environmental matters, engaged attendees with a very popular window decal craft to protect birds, which fit the WMBD theme perfectly. Alberta Parks staff Bailey and co-worker Jackson also joined us with a display and a variety of useful handouts.
On Saturday, Peter Daly from the City of Edmonton Pest Management Department set up a pond dipping station out on the John E. Poole boardwalk. Adults and children alike enjoyed learning about creatures that make their home in waters around Big Lake.
Dr. Gordon Court, biologist with Alberta Fish and Wildlife, brought the ever popular Vinnie the Falcon to help inform those attending the event about progress being made towards securing the future of species at risk in Alberta.
The following photos of the event were taken by BLESS members Lasiru Wijesuriya, Teresa Marshal and Dave Burkhart. Below the photos are links to the display posters that provide details of BLESS Activities and Accomplishments over the 30 years of our organization's history.
